Iceland Cloud server

Between 2001 and 2005 I worked at lot with a company on Iceland called Idega HF. I was hired by a Swedish company called CubeCon who used the Icelandic company to develop a rather big platform for the Swedish school system using the idegaweb Java beans J2EE framework. We worked together for some years.

Two of the minds of Idega HF started up a new company called GreenQloud which is a Cloud Server computing company using “green” energy. As you probably know, Iceland has a never ending, abundant stream of and ample energy resource called Thermal Heating which can be converted to electricity. This is what powers the GreenQloud servers.

It felt natural for me to try their platform out for HamSphere and the result you can see now when you start the HamSphere transceiver. Connect to Reykjavik, IS server and you will find it very fast an reliable.

Have in mind that the Icelandic server has a slightly different propagation model based on its location in the North Atlantic. The Icelandic Radio and TV broadcast company have some podcasts relayed on the BC band.

Hardware failure

It’s been a while since I updated my blog. Have had serious problems with my main server in Sweden. It started to halt/stop on randon occations. The screen just went black. When I examined the logs I could see the following:

Mar 11 04:22:17 server2 kernel: ata1.00: (BMDMA stat 0×20)
Mar 11 04:22:17 server2 kernel: ata1.00: tag 0 cmd 0×25 Emask 0×9 stat 0×51 err 0×40 (media error)
Mar 11 04:22:17 server2 kernel: sd 0:0:0:0: SCSI error: return code = 0×08000002
Mar 11 04:22:17 server2 kernel: sda: Current: sense key: Medium Error
Mar 11 04:22:17 server2 kernel: Additional sense: Unrecovered read error – auto reallocate failed
Mar 11 04:22:17 server2 kernel: end_request: I/O error, dev sda, sector 1305413389
Mar 11 04:22:17 server2 kernel: ata1: EH complete
Mar 11 04:22:17 server2 kernel: SCSI device sda: 1465149168 512-byte hdwr sectors (750156 MB)

It is evidently obvious. Either the Hard disk controller or one of the harddisk are slowly failing.

I have fixed the read error by marking those sectors bad. But this was a serious warning that made me order a brand new server. It will be installed sometime during this week.

At present the server is holding up and it is in operation knock on wood.
